Creative Spaces was initiated by the City of Melbourne in an effort to address the critical need for affordable artist space in the Melbourne CBD. In 2009, with the financial support of Arts Victoria, the scope of the website expanded to include spaces across Victoria. As use of the website increased so too did the demand for the services it provided. Artists, performers and producers wanted access to spaces that were not always established or available for hire. They needed spaces for lease, shared space or short term access to vacant buildings marked for redevelopment or demolition. It became apparent that the website needed to offer a broader range of spaces to fulfill its role as the portal through which spaces suitable for creative production could be sourced.
RMIT Architecture and the Committee for Melbourne’s Future Focus Group combined forces to develop a project called ‘M:Urban - Modifying the City’. Out of that project emerged an interface for a website called ‘Vacancy Exchange’ that envisaged a site shared by building owners and artists alike that allowed access to underutilised or vacant properties around Melbourne. The concept of this website was incorporated into the Creative Spaces website.
In 2008, RMIT’s Design Research Institute funded the research and redesign of the new website’s infrastructure in response to the requirements of the Creative Spaces user groups.
The City of Melbourne and Arts Victoria are the principle partners of Creative Spaces.
