MELANIE JOY CAPLE

Painter working in River Studios

What appealed to you most about your studio space when you first saw it?

I love the concept behind the River Studios, and thought that the development of the warehouse where the studios are situated was perfect - sustainable, supported, and light filled. I love that the light filters through on to the floorboards of my studio, and that it's my own.

How have you made this space your own?

I have hung my own works on the walls, as well as some sentimental pieces, and have furnished it with exactly what I need. I've everything I need in here to continue my practice, whether it's in the field of fine arts, or working on projects on my computer.

What do you create or make in your studio?

I draw and paint, and so I have my easel permanently set up, as well as always having access to quality paper. I also come here to write my essays for uni! And to work on various computer-based projects, including work for the Melbourne Music Video Festival, and also on funding applications for artists.

What is your favourite item in your studio at the moment (or in the whole building)?

My favourite item in my studio would have to be my various ceramic vases and pots for holding brushes, and small ceramic dishes for mixing paints.

My favourite thing about the whole building would have to be the stairwell - I love feeling the air change as I approach my creative space.
