About the Australian Art Orchestra
The AAO was formed in 1994 to work the rich ground that lies between fully-notated and improvised music—between the classical and jazz traditions.
Eighteen of the best improvising/composers from across Australia presented the AAO’s first concerts at Melbourne Festival and the ensemble has gone on to perform an astounding range of original works over the ensuing 20 years including pioneering collaborations with musicians from South India, Bali, South Korea and Arnhem Land. In 2013 the proud history and traditions of the AAO found a new life and focus under artistic director Peter Knight who succeeded founding artistic director Paul Grabowsky.
The AAO is managed and produced by Insite Arts International.
