About Julia and Crystal

Stuff is an independent clothing label established in 2015 by Julia Francis and Crystal Dunn. We create plant-based women’s wear that is fresh, airy and raw, reflecting our ongoing exploration of material technology, history and poetics. Our clothing is rich and subtle, with a strong focus on tactility and comfort. We have a strong interest in biodegradable materials, natural dyeing techniques and botanical textile designs.

Our SS16 debut collection Pulled Stuff probes the structure of fabric, pulling out and adding yarns to create fibrous texture and subtle gaps. The cloth is split into multiple panels, resulting in oversize ribbons that overlap and shear to gently shape the garments. Constructed from hemp and viscose fabrics that are coarse yet fluid, the understated silhouettes ensure the SS16 collection is refined, relaxed and essentially wearable.

Crystal studied Fashion Design at RMIT University from 2006 until 2009. In the past she has been employed in the workroom of Melbourne label MATERIALBYPRODUCT, and has created costumes for the Australian Ballet. Julia completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the VCA majoring in Drawing from 2010 until December 2012. Julia has had multiple exhibitions, and undertook an Artist Residency in 2013 in Berlin.

How do you use your space?

Lots of sewing! We use our space to develop and refine ideas for garments, and to construct our finished pieces. We spend a lot of time experimenting with materials and trialling silhouettes. We also do a lot of organising and re-arranging - garment construction takes up a lot of space so we’re always finding new places to move things.
