About Alice, Caroline and William
Alice Dixon, Caroline Meaden and William McBride work in a non-hierarchical collaboration as performers and devisers of new unusual contemporary dance-theatre. Our debut work, THIS IS WHAT’S HAPPENING, was presented as part of Darebin Arts’ Speakeasy program for the 2015 Melbourne Fringe.
The work was critically acclaimed, won the Melbourne Fringe Award for Best Dance, and was nominated for an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance and a Green Room Award for Best Sound (Emah Fox).
Our second work, FALLEN O’ER, was commissioned as part of the Abbotsford Convent Foundation’s inaugural Alchemy program in May 2016. Our third work, BLOWIN’ UP, was presented as part of the Substation’s 2016 curated Melbourne Fringe Program, and was awarded the Arts House Evolution Award at the 2016 Melbourne Fringe Awards.
Our collaborative practice is an enquiry at the intersection of contemporary dance a nd theatre that foregrounds rigorous and unusual physicality, inventive writing and spoken delivery, and choreographic performance structures and dramaturgical logics. Our performance works are layer-cakes of form and reference that speak to the complexity of what it feels like to be alive in this strange era.
What attracted you to the space and what makes your studio suitable for your practice
Studio practice is at the heart of the work we make, which takes time, experimentation, practice, conditioning, refinement. The Boyd Studio 1 residency is a rare and excellent opportunity to do this full time. Having a studio base is an immeasurable boon for performing artists.
During our time at Boyd, we intend to develop a major new work called 'Lady Example', and to cultivate our choreographic practice as a collective and as individual artists. We intend to hold frequent showings of work in progress, both for our established networks and for the community based around the Boyd Studios.
