    Linden New Art Inc (Linden) is a leading public art gallery based in St Kilda. Originally an historic home, Linden is a unique gallery whose restrictions become starting points for artists to explore, respond and create.

    Linden has one studio space available for lease and we are looking for a writer living or working locally to join us in residence at Linden.

    Established in 1986, Linden’s mission is to be a centre of creative excellence. As a home for new art we are open to bold ideas, to different ways of experiencing and seeing the world and oneself. We believe this is an important part of contemporary art and we aim to foster a curious audience that is open to engage with new art, ideas and approaches to the world.

    We aim to:

    > Exhibit quality new contemporary art by mid-career artists

    > Support and mentor artists engaged with Linden

    > Connect with our community by providing exhibitions, education and public programs > Operate a well-governed, managed and sustainable organisation.

    WRITER'S STUDIO

    > One freshly painted room measuring 3.9m (l) x 2.35 (w) including a small storage area > High ceiling with gas hydronic heating

    > Room has direct access to upstairs balcony.

    The studio has access to:

    > Shared kitchen – including a fridge, kettle, microwave

    > Shared bathrooms

    > After-hours access is limited to respect the privacy of our neighbours and the office spaces are available to access from 7am-9pm daily.

    Some important things to note:

    > Linden is unable to provide reception services for any tenants

    > Tenants’ visitors must access the building via the rear external stairs & contact the relevant artist/writer directly

    > Linden’s building and site is a strictly non-smoking

    > Tenants and all their employees must have a current Police and a Working with Children Check. Failure to pass these could see a termination of a lease.

    > As a heritage building accessibility is restricted and the spaces may not be suitable for some organisations as a result. Please contact the gallery to discuss any particular needs so that we can advise you of the physical constraints to access.

    > There is no onsite parking available for tenants.

    APPLICATION PROCESS

    Linden is looking for suitable tenants to lease the studio space. The applications are accessed by a selection panel made up of Linden Board members, Linden staff and City of Port Phillip representative. The Studio committee seeks writers who: 

    > Live or work in the City of Port Phillip with preference given to artist who reside in the City of Port Phillip

    > Able to demonstrate a commitment to developing a professional writing practice

    > Able to work in a studio space in a collaborative manner

    > Are willing to promote their work in the community through agreed studio open days > Demonstrate a commitment to attend the studio on a regular basis

    > Have a particular project to work on whilst in residence at Linden

    > Demonstrated capacity and commitment to contributing the cultural life of the city

    There are tram and bus stops nearby on the Acland and Fitzroy Street shopping precincts.

    TRAMS: 12, 16, 96 (3A weekends only)

    BUSES: 600, 606, 623, 246

    There is limited 1.5 hour & all day parking on Acland Street.

    Paid parking is available nearby at the Prince of Wales Hotel,

    the Palais Theatre and on Belford Street West (off Acland Street).
