We welcome applications from emerging & established creatives for solo, group and curated exhibitions. Off the Kerb also supports independent launches and forums as well as large-scale projects & teaching programs. Off the Kerb welcomes applications from universities/institutions for Graduate shows.
This space is suitable for visual arts, music, small scale theatre, literature / spoken word, community and multi-media / film events. The spaces in the venue are: 4 separate galleries and 1 studio.
Off the Kerb is an old-English style two-storey shop front building with a large shop front window. It has a distinctive facade. Off the Kerb has 4 exhibition spaces: front gallery, back gallery, side gallery & upstairs gallery. The ground floor has high ceilings. The ground level floors are a dark wood, as are the upstairs floors. Each gallery has a distinctive feature, which gives the space character. The front gallery has large floor to ceiling front windows, making artwork clearly visible from the street and giving exhibitions extra exposure.
The back gallery is slightly cozier, great for more intimate works and complete with a fire place, which can be incorporated into artworks in various ways, adding interest. The smaller sizes of the side and upstairs galleries makes them suitable for video and sound work or small scale pieces .The upstairs gallery also has windows overlooking Johnston Street.
The side gallery is unique as it is the only space which has white wooden floor boards.Off the Kerb also has a private artist studio upstairs which will be open to the public on occasion in the calendar year or by appointment (by ringing the gallery). Off the Kerb has front and back entrances. Both entrances are appropriate for work to be brought into the gallery. But if works are excessively large scale, they would need to be dismantled or put together on premises. Off the Kerb has kitchen facilities as well as bathroom facilities. Off the Kerb has flexible, superior quality gallery track lighting.
Off the Kerb aims to be as affordable as possible for artists. All prices are for a 2 week show and include GST. Payment plans may be arranged to ease the pressure off finances. Groups are welcome to share each space so share the costs.
