Outer Space Artist Run Initiative
Type of space: Multi-use Space, Music Performance Venue, Performance venue, Visual Art Studio, Art Gallery
From December 2017 Outer Space Artist Run Initiative has occupied a two story warehouse space in the inner city Brisbane suburb of West End leased and supported by the Brisbane City Council. From 2018 onwards, Outer Space ARI is a not-for-profit gallery and studio complex that promotes education, career development and community engagement with the arts. The location of the complex lends itself to a discourse between some of the leading public visual arts institutions in Queensland. The exhibition program provides a platform, space, community and incentive for artists working in Brisbane. Through professional development and collaboration with existing artists our initiative will afford a chance for artists to overcome the static positon of being “early career” or “emerging” and become more self-sustaining.
A curated 10-month program sees monthly exhibitions of both local and interstate artists. Exhibitions are subject to a call-out process. Exhibitions will be open to the public from Wednesday – Saturday, with exhibition openings occurring on the first Friday of every second month.
Running in tandem with the exhibition calendar A 4-month artist residency program for emerging and early career Australian visual artists sustains this rigorous pursuit of career development. Executed via an application process, the residency program supports artists seeking to develop, challenge and extend their practices. Successful applicants to the residency program are expected to attend weekly forums, seminars and critiques. Additionally, the space is also equipped with a dedicated for-hire community space. Our public program of lectures, artist talks and workshops supports our emphasis on education.
Between exhibition installs the warehouse space is transformed into an all ages music venue. Exceptional local and national acts are invited for a once monthly Friday and Saturday evening program. Focused on providing a safe community site for young people, the events are ticketed, alcohol free and all-inclusive.
