Soldier, Sailor / Tinker, Tailor - studio and co-working
Type of space: Co-Working Space, Design Studio, Art Gallery, Visual Art Studio
You can hear it in the middle distance – a roar, a rumble, a crash.
It's a warehouse on Kerr coming down – piles being sunk, concrete poured for the foundations of some vast new concrete behemoth of an apartment complex. Away up on Rose – besides the market – they've gutted an entire block, carved out a tremendous pit in the clay and gravel understructure of the city. Car-parking – hundreds of them.
This is change – and, in a market economy, this is effectively inexorable. These processes can't be halted. (Indeed, Vogue magazine have just, without a hint of irony, deemed Fitzroy to be the 11th 'coolest' neighbourhood in the world...) Well, you make your counter-moves where you can. One of the things about this third wave of gentrification (and, hell, we all benefited from the first and second) is that it shifts the creative, essentially productive types out. This can be well and good – you move with your community, carving out new niches, new territories.
But sometimes... sometimes you can't beat centrality. You can't beat proximity. You can't beat being right under their noses (whoever your imagined 'they' might be...) At Soldier Sailor, we have three desk spaces available from May – three desk spaces in the heart of Fitzroy. This is central. This is proximate.
