Tearaway Types aims to provide an open and collaborative space for artists, designers, or creative businesses with a space to work from in the South Eastern suburbs.
There is an exciting opportunity to join the studios at their inception and make them your own!
The studios are set up to host two tenants per room. The rooms are open to the hallway and we have designed them this way on purpose. We feel that it’s important to foster an environment where people are able to see each other and collaborate within their community as they feel suits them best.
If you want to share the space with a friend, that’s absolutely fine by us.
For this reason, we’ve left the front room (the shop front) empty of studios, to provide our tenants with a space to work outside of their individual studio spaces. We envisage Tearaway Types being a place where all types of creative people can work independently as well as alongside others. We feel it’s important to create an artistic community where people feel empowered and inspired to create.
The studios are available as two half spaces (where you will share with a studio mate) or as one full space (double rent).
The shop front is a versatile space available for tenants to use and work from.
We are really keen to get to know prospective tenants, how they envisage using the space, and how we can work together. Our main focus is getting a good community of artists and creatives together.

We are keen to hear from all types of artists including painters, jewellers, designers, filmmakers, illustrators, art directors, costume designers, make-up artists, sound designers, animators, sculptors, visual artists, music producers, film events and maybe even pop up shops!
We welcome both emerging and established creatives to contact us.

Lease terms are 6 to 12 months. Shorter term leases can be negotiated.
The studios are presented as as a blank canvas, as we feel that everyone works their own particular way. Just bring in what you need to make the space yours. We do have a couple of spare desks available for use if needed (first in best dressed).

Rent a Desk
All rates are inclusive of GST and outgoings
Daily rate for the lease of the front room per 24 hour period. Price includes use of kitchenette and bathroom amenities.
Note: daily rate includes a 24-hour period and is dependent on availabilities, first preference goes to resident artists wanting to use the space

The Shop Front
This space has been created with the intention of providing our tenants with a space to get away from their studios and utilise the floor to ceiling window at the front of the building.
A large 8 seater table creates a collaborative atmosphere, and the hanging plants will provide a calm space to draw, paint or maybe just to sit and watch the world go by.
The shop front is almost 30m2. We have kept the original chemists’ counter as a nod to the history of the building and removed the roof to expose the original beams.
Jodi at Moss & Maple in Murrumbeena will be coming on board to fill the space with beautiful plants, and Narayani Palmer’s ceramic planters will be available to purchase with them (https://www.instagram.com/narayanipalmerceramics/).
Our tenants are also able to use this space to meet with clients or exhibit their works.
Studio 1a and 1b
This room is the first room off the 30m2 shop front, and measures just over 13m2.
The full room will cost $800 per month or $400 per 1/2 space (if you share with another artist).
This room is a newly created space which was where the original chemist’s countertop stood. We’ve built a new wall and intentionally left the inward facing part of the new wall exposed. The exposed beams are able to be used as shelves, or canvases etc are able to be mounted directly onto the wall.
Studio 2a and 2b
This room measures just over 14m2. 1/2 of the space is already leased, so there’s currently one 1/2 space available at $450.00 per month.
This room has been left in the original condition of the building, with some exposed brick showing through the old plaster.
There’s also some natural light which comes in through the high factory style windows. The original roof in this room was removed and now features double height ceilings.
This space is just over 8m2 and features two original brick walls. This room is $475.00 per month and has filtered light and natural air flow coming in from the back door. This space has two points of access (Currently under application!)
Studio 4a and 4b
This room is at the rear of the studios. With a nice big window, it’s almost 14m2. This room boasts the most natural light throughout the day time, and has just been repainted. This room will be $950.00 per month (or $475 per 1/2 space).
This rear room is able to be secured. It has two points of access. This room would suit a small business or commercial artist looking to work full time from the building.
There’s also a (still functional) bathroom coming off Studio 4, which is able to be leased as a store room for an extra $50 per month.
