The Diggers’ Store is an iconic heritage building in Castlemaine, established in 1857. Once selling mining supplies to the local diggers, it has an historical significance for the region.
In the store today visitors will find a multiple use space, with a gallery/project space, a selection of independent vinyl records, art works, and espresso. Behind the main house and store, sits a carefully converted 1850s stable, run as bed & breakfast accommodation. Adjoining the old stable is a large stone building containing a 100% analogue recording studio – Sound Recordings.
There are various spaces used for creative projects on the property, including, but not limited to:
Shop Space: The downstairs shop space has a stage for performance and ceremony; double doors leading out on to a grapevine laden courtyard; original wooden floor, and a fire place. Capacity: 80 people standing, 35 people sit-down dinner, 50 people seated theatre-style.
The Big Room: Upstairs from the shop space, The Big Room is full of natural light, with huge windows, wooden floors, and an impressively high ceiling. It is used as an exhibition space, photography studio, and for workshops, meetings, and other projects. Capacity: 40 people max.
Sound Recording Studio: Set in an old stone shed, this space can be used for various projects, include gatherings, gigs, and rehearsal space. Capacity: 55-60 people at tables, 70-80 standing.
The Diggers Store Gallery: The Big Room and Shop space are used as a gallery throughout most of the year - booked around other events in the space. Applications open two times per year, however, enquiries are welcomed any time.
Outdoors: Various outdoor areas - the orchard, the courtyard, etc - are also available for hire depending on the project/event.
PA/Sound system available onsite. Experienced sound technician also available on the premises.
We are flexible with how the spaces are used and would price depending on the project, the use of the rooms, the length of hire, and the financial situation of the hirer (e.g. commercial and private rates would be priced higher than rates for community groups and not for profit organisations).
Please feel free to enquire to get an accurate quote for your project. And if your budget is limited please tell us! We're happy to try and compromise where we can.
There is some limited parking outside the venue. For larger events we can arrange parking on the next door property if necessary, for an additional hireage fee.
