Details:
The beautiful heritage Cowen Gallery houses a permanent exhibition of 150 works of art from the Library’s collection. Featured are portraits of historic figures as well as works depicting the European exploration and settlement of Australia. Important works include William Strutt's Black Thursday 1851 and The Marco Polo by Thomas Robertson.
The Cowen Gallery offers a grand and elegant setting for large cocktail parties and dinners. The ‘Red Rotunda’ can be hired separately and makes a stunning backdrop for an intimate sit-down dinner or small cocktail party.
The State Library is open from 10am - 9pm Monday to Friday, and 10am - 6pm Friday to Sunday.
The Gallery is open to the public free-of-charge during the Library's opening hours, and is available for hire as a function space outside of these hours. The Red Rotunda is available at other times by negotiation.

Venue hire includes staff for venue set up, supervision, signage, access to cloaking facilities and basic A/V, furniture and equipment.
- Special Requirements
Candles are not permitted in the Gallery. Floral arrangements can only be used in consultation with the Venue Manager and will be subject to inspection prior to entering the space. Drinks must be served via tray service. Dance floors are not permitted in the Gallery. However, to ensure your needs are met, each event will be considered on an individual basis. The Venue Manager will be happy to discuss your specific requirements.
