Details:
Gasworks Arts Park was originally the South Melbourne Gasworks. Formed in 1872 it began supplying gas in 1873, operating 24 hours a day and employing several hundred men. Coal was hauled from the town pier at the end of Bay Street, Port Melbourne by horse drawn tram.
In 1992 the old South Melbourne Gasworks was recreated as Gasworks Arts Park. On 8 acres of beautiful parkland, Gasworks is now a community arts centre owned by the City of Port Phillip.
The Gasworks theatre is a flexible performance space with a flat, sprung timber, floor and a raked, modular and movable seating system. The venue is particularly suited to productions where intimate contact between the audience and the performers is required.
The modular seating system can enable seating for between 66 and 220 patrons in various configurations. These include end stage, corner stage, in the round and side stage configurations. Dressing room facilities are also available, and 2 additional spaces can be hired as green room, for rehearsals or additional dressing room space.
