Details:
Platform Artists Group Inc. was founded in 1990 as a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enabling artists to transform public space with challenging contemporary art across a wide range of creative disciplines.
The main Platform display cases are located under Degraves Street in the popular art deco subway (known as Campbell Arcade), and in the old display cases at the neogothic Majorca Building on Centre Place, off Flinders Lane.
Platform is supported by the City of Melbourne, Arts Victoria and the Australia Council, as well as artists and other private sponsors.
There are a number of separate spaces that make up Platform Artists Group Inc. and each display area is programmed by the organisation on an annual basis. Applications for the following year close in July each year and artists interested in showing should contact the Platform Selection Committee at least 6-12 months in advance to make an application to the space. Curated and group shows are preferred for the central dozen glass cases that make up the main subway site (simply called Platform), but the smaller surrounding cases (Sample, Vitrine, Frame, Garden and Majorca) are all available for solo artists also.
There are double power outlets and four florescent lights in every Platform space, but not at Majorca Building Cabinets. All spaces have high security locks and while Platform Artists Group Inc. covers the costs of rent and public liability insurance, artists are responsible for artwork insurance and their own material and installation costs. Platform Artists Group Inc. also provides full assistance with development, installation, deinstallation, promotion, opening nights and documentation.
