The Playhouse

Designed specifically for drama, the Playhouse can also accommodate an orchestra for dance, musical comedy and chamber opera. It seats up to 884 people and is renowned for its foyer collection of indigenous artworks.

Rapid changeover from proscenium to thrust stage configuration is achieved using a forstage lift. In the uppermost position it forms the thrust stage and in the lowest position it provides access to the stage basement and stores. Sound systems can be installed to suit individual productions, or the permanently installed surround sound system can used in association with film and special effects. Backstage accommodation includes dressing rooms for up to 39 people, stage management offices, a production office, drama rehearsal room, and wardrobe.

Total stage area is 321sq metres. Wall to wall area is 20.8 metres wide and 12.47 metres in depth from proscenium wall to rear wall. The proscenium is 8 metres high and 12 metres wide.
