Textile Designer working in River Studios
What appealed to you most about your studio space when you first saw it?
The industrial aesthetic and surrounds of the building, and its proximity to Footscray, the river, the port and the city.
How have you made this space your own?
By filling it with the recycled materials and machines I use for my practice.
What do you create or make in your studio?
Small and large wall hangings, hot water bottle covers, poufs, arm warmers, scarves, coasters, tablemats, clothes, cushions, floor rugs.
What is your favourite item in your studio at the moment (or in the whole building)?
My newly serviced 1960s Bernina Record sewing machine.
I am a designer/maker and textile artist working primarily with recycled materials such as felted wool knitwear.
I have been making homewares and accessories under two labels -- Gaye Abandon and Body Parts since 2005. More recently I have begun making wall pieces for commissions and exhibition.
