DIRTY DOZEN AND CAPSULE OPEN CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

City of Melbourne’s Creative Spaces Program has now opened Expressions of Interest for the Dirty Dozen and Capsule exhibition spaces. The site is one of Melbourne’s most unique exhibition spaces, located in Campbell Arcade, the busy commuter underpass linking Flinders Street station and Degraves Street.
Creative professionals working in any medium or discipline are eligible to apply. Arts organisations, institutions, festivals and curators are also strongly encouraged to apply.
EOIs are open for the below dates:
- Mon 2 September - Mon 30 September
- Tues 1 October - Sun 27 October
- Mon 28 October - Sun 24 November
- Mon 25 November – Sun 29 December
The Campbell Arcade and/or Degraves underpass will be impacted by the Metro Tunnel Project. By submitting an application you acknowledge, the exhibition spaces Dirty Dozen and Capsule, may at any time be impacted by the Metro Tunnel Project. In this scenario, any agreement for use will be terminated and no compensation will be paid to the applicant. City of Melbourne reserves the right to cancel any approval given to exhibit at the Dirty Dozen or Capsule, or to order the removal of works at any time and in the City of Melbourne’s absolute discretion.
Successful applicants are assessed on the strength of their proposal, their level of inventiveness and the way their work addresses the public space and its capacity to attract attention.
Applicants are encouraged to visit Campbell Arcade in person to get a clearer understanding of the location and its traffic.
You will need to provide:
- Name, email address and contact number
- Proposed Exhibition Title
- CV (If you are applying as a group, a combined CV of no more than one page per individual is required)
- Images of indicative works
- Preferred exhibition dates (selected from the date ranges provided-multiple selections are encouraged)
- Plans indicating how the vitrines will be used
- Support letters (optional)
- Preferred exhibition dates
Opening hours: Dirty Dozen and Capsule are located in the Campbell Arcade which is a public thoroughfare. The site is open Monday to Friday 7.00am – 7.00pm and Saturday 10am – 5pm. It is closed on Sunday.
Install and de-install: Bump in and bump out is included in the available date ranges. If successful, bump in and bump out arrangements should be discussed with the Creative Spaces team. Please note that successful applicants are responsible for their own bump in and bump out.
Openings: Openings do not occur in the space whilst the arcade is open as it is a major commuter thoroughfare. Any openings are to be organised by the applicant, must occur outside of opening hours and must be discussed with Creative Spaces team members. Please note that opening requests can be denied at the discretion of the program.
Electricity: Display cases are lit with on/off capacity for lighting. Display cases have 10 amp GPO power supply. All 12 share the same circuit. Capsule also has a double power socket. The site is not suitable for video work as electricity is switched off every evening and turned on again in the morning.
Material: All Dirty Dozen display cases are glass fronted with plasterboard walls and ceiling. Capsule is glass fronted and backed with mirrors. The floor is unfinished wooden boards and the ceiling is plaster.
Signage: General signage is provided by Creative Spaces. Applicants will be asked to provide short, exhibition summary text to be included in the signage. Due to limited space, this text may be edited at the discretion of Creative Spaces.
