Coates Community Arts: Events and Arts Space
Space overview
Coates Community Arts (CCA) is an arts space in the CBD on Collins Street, set within an unlikely medical building. It offers a relaxed environment that supports independent projects, collaboration, and creative exchange between artists and the wider community.
CCA is suitable for one-off and recurring events, including workshops, art classes, book launches, pop-up retail, dance, and music. The 90sqm space features an open floor plan, kitchenette, storeroom, white walls, an original timber veneer wall, a retro counter with bench seating, and large industrial windows. It is fitted with fluorescent and track lighting, ceiling fans, and an in-built sound system suitable for background music. CCA provides 45 stackable chairs, 4 trestle tables, and POS hardware for events at no additional cost. Glassware is available for hire.
CCA is at the top end of Collins Street, near Spring Street and Flinders Lane. It is close to public transport, parking, shopping, cafes, bars and restaurants. CCA sits directly opposite the Sofitel Hotel, within the Coates Building. Constructed in the late 1950s, it is a post-war modernist commercial building. Many tenancies are now vacant, with a small number of medical practitioners remaining. CCA is the first and only arts space at this location.
