Space overview
Coates Community Arts is an independent arts space with two studios in the Coates Building at 20 Collins Street, Melbourne. We're located in Suite 6 on the fourth floor, in the former office of the Federation of Chinese Associations. From 1 December 2026, we’ll have a studio available for rent.
Coates Community Arts has an open-plan area for group activities and a shared kitchenette. We seek one creative and professional person who wants a private, secure workspace within an inner-city arts space shared with an artist and our life drawing classes. Available from 1 December, the studio is $91.01 per week (excl. GST) + $15 per month for electricity. Total monthly cost (incl. GST + electricity): $450.00. The 2.5 × 2 m studio is lockable, includes shelving and storage, and is perfect for freelancers, independent workers, and small business owners. Studio occupants should be adaptable to community activities, including weekly life drawing classes (no studio access Monday to Wednesday, 5:30PM to 9:30PM), rehearsals, and pop-up events in communal areas. Note: Studios are not well ventilated and are unsuitable for those working with oil paints and solvents.
We are located on Collins Street between Spring and Exhibition Streets, in a convenient inner-city area with easy access to trains, trams, restaurants, cafes, and bars.

The Coates Building is directly opposite the Sofitel Hotel. We are 140 metres from Parliament Train Station (2 minute walk). Trams 11, 12, 48 and 109 are at the door. Jump off at Tram Stop #8 Spring Street/Collins Street which is in Melbourne’s free tram zone.
Parking
Paid parking on Collins, Little Collins, and Exhibition Streets. For free street parking, we recommend the streets bordering Fitzroy Gardens. Parking is free in this area from 6:30pm. It’ll take you 5 minutes to walk from here.
