Space overview

Bring your next big idea to life at a vibrant artistic hub set within a beautiful historic building – bring it to Fringe Common Rooms.

Common Rooms is a meeting place housing a licensed performance space and a salon, for one-off and regular events, including live music, performance, comedy, cabaret, dance parties, spoken word, workshops and rehearsals. We’re a cultural enterprise, which means that we use bar sales from commercial events to support local artists with opportunities to test their ideas and reach new audiences. We offer a vibrant year-round program of accessible performances and events at Trades Hall, ensuring everyone can discover the best emerging and independent artistic talent. Fringe Common Rooms is a culturally and physically safe space for our community, including LGBTIQ+, First Nations, people who are Deaf or with disability. We welcome all artists and creative people, as well as the residents of Trades Hall, workers and members of the union movement. Get in touch for more information on putting on a show, accessing affordable rehearsal space or have your next function with us!

Located in Melbourne’s iconic Trades Hall, in the heart of Carlton and just a stone's throw from Melbourne CBD.

There are two spaces available at Common Rooms – the Old Ballroom (standing capacity 170, seated is 80-110) and the Annexe (standing capacity 70, seated is 30) – which can be booked separately or together.

The venue is wheelchair accessible (including lift access to the stage) and has a hearing loop, and in keeping with our Trades Hall home, Common Rooms is a place where everyone is welcome.

We support artists at all stages of their careers to develop and present their work. We encourage work by First Nations artists, artists who are Deaf or with a disability and other voices from the margins. We want to see as much female-led and gender non-binary-led work as possible.

Pricing Terms

https://melbournefringe.com.au/fringe-common-rooms/venue-hire/ PRICES ARE DEPENDENT ON USE & SPACE REQUIRED. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR DETAILS. Artistic Rehearsals, Industry Meetings and Residencies: Available for hire between 10am and 4pm every weekday, we offer accessible pricing options for independent artists and producers General hire: Depending on the kind of event you want to run, we’ll set a hire fee based on either a door-split, flat venue-hire cost or minimum bar spend. When there’s shared risk (i.e. door splits) there will always be a minimum charge to ensure basic costs are covered. The hire fee includes a dedicated venue staff member to assist you with making the event a success. A team member will discuss the appropriate hire model with you during the booking process. Public Events: Common Rooms is open seven days for public events in any artform. We love one-off gigs, and we don’t program week-long seasons of work outside of Festival time. We have a top sound system, projector, screen, beautiful bar and more fancy moving lights than you can poke a stick at. Private Functions: We are available for private functions and events – weddings, parties, anything. Discounts for our mates in the Union movement. The venue holds a 3am licence on all days except Sunday, which is licenced until 1am. Banned Items: Trades hall is a heritage-listed building so there are a few items that we just have to say a hard no to. A full list will be provided in the venue hire contract but some important things to note are; No alteration will be made to the lighting or sound rig without the consent of the Venue Manager, no spirit stoves, candles, lamps or inflammable gas or spirits or petrol engines of any kind shall be bought onto the venue premises. No smoking shall be permitted in the venue or on stage (including e-cigarettes).
