Joel Bray in The Pavilion at Fitzroy Gardens

Creative Spaces is excited to announce that Joel Bray, Wiradjuri choreographer and performance-maker, Luke George, performance and visual artist, Stephen Nicolazzo, director and theatre-maker, and Lucie Sutherland, program producer for Joel Bray Dance and emerging independent producer, have been successful in securing the second three-month residency at The Pavilion in Fitzroy Gardens from April to June 2021.

During their residency, the artists will utilise the space for working, rehearsing and presenting. Adopting a ‘glasshouse’ approach, the space will be constantly full of dancing bodies, offering passersby organic and engaging spontaneous viewing opportunities. Audiences usually only receive the ‘finished product’, now they’ll enjoy a rare opportunity to sit, eat and watch the choreographic process in action. Windows will feature artworks in a changing exhibition, as well as performance footage displayed on a monitor.

Creative Spaces program is focused on identifying and activating space for the creative sector. Creative Spaces currently manages seven workspace and presentation spaces across the City of Melbourne along with the national Creative Spaces website.

Creative Spaces was tasked with activating The Pavilion in Fitzroy Gardens between January and June 2021, in line with the goals of City of Melbourne’s COVID-19 Reactivation and Recovery Plan. Activation of the space will provide opportunities to artists who can help reactivate and reinvigorate Melbourne whilst providing a boost to the local economy.
