City of Melbourne

The City of Melbourne recognises that affordable space is critical to the development and cultivation of an innovative and engaged creative sector. It offers a number of facilities for creative use ranging from Arts House (contemporary arts), ArtPlay and Signal (innovative arts programs for children and young people 0 - 25yrs and families), Docklands Library, (performance space, recording studio, and creative editing suites).

The Creative Spaces program specifically identifies opportunities in both the private and public sector that can provide suitable, secure and affordable space for creative use.  It has developed models for refurbishing space affordably and sustainably and its efforts have been recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects. Creative Spaces manages River Studios, Boyd School Studios, Meat Market Studios, Creative Spaces:Guild.

The Creative Spaces website is an initiative of the Creative Spaces program. The original website was developed in partnership with Arts Victoria in 2006 and has since been redesigned to cater for creative people across Australia. The City of Sydney was the first interstate Council to licence the website and to actively use it to promote spaces in their area, closely followed by Brisbane City Council.

The Creative Spaces website is a free resource that promotes space on behalf of owners, venue managers, real estate agents and local government to creative people across Australia looking for space in which to develop or show their work.
